Creative Brief

Returning for its tenth season, How the Universe Works continues to explore the cosmos through science-led storytelling and cutting-edge visuals. Pioneer Productions brought Little Shadow on board to support the latest season with fresh graphic content-explaining vast, complex astrophysical phenomena in a way that is both accessible and visually dynamic. Our work needed to blend seamlessly into the show’s established visual style, while also evolving it for new episodes.

Our Approach

We developed a suite of graphics that clarified key scientific concepts-black holes, quantum fields, planetary formation, stellar collapse-using cinematic motion design and CGI.

  • Scientific simulations: Visualised phenomena like neutron star collisions and gravitational waves through stylised, data-informed sequences.

  • Explainer graphics: Designed bold, digestible 2D overlays and schematic animations to accompany expert interviews and narrative VO.

  • Cosmic environments: Used particle simulations and matte-painted textures to illustrate planetary surfaces, nebulae, and deep-space structures.

All assets were created in After Effects, Cinema 4D and Houdini, with a focus on legibility, scale, and atmospheric drama-bringing science to life without overcomplication.

The Results

Season 10 aired on Discovery+ with high engagement, with our graphics playing a key role in helping viewers visualise and connect with abstract cosmic topics. The graphic language was praised for maintaining the show’s cinematic appeal while supporting scientific accuracy and narrative pace.
