Creative Brief

As QI entered a new series, Talkback Productions approached Little Shadow to refresh the show’s title sequence-one of the most recognisable intros on British television. The brief was to retain the show’s whimsical, intellectual character while evolving the visual identity with contemporary design and animation. The update needed to convey curiosity, knowledge, and playfulness, all within the first few seconds of airtime.

Our Approach

Using the original titles that are well known and the heart and soul of the brands identity – we didn’t want to stray too far from what the QI quizzers know and love. So we reimagined the sequence as a visual journey through ideas-starting with a swirl of animated graphics that unfold into a celestial orrery, displaying the letter corresponding to the series into the well known series of different imagery. The animation acts as a metaphor for discovery, with motifs drawn from science, nature, literature, and history orbiting the frame. It was more a sense of bringing them into a new era, rather than reinventing the wheel. 

All elements were crafted in Blender and After Effects with custom vector assets and supplied footage and imagery. Timing was calibrated to align with the show’s established music cue, ensuring familiarity even within the updated visual language.

The Results

The refreshed titles premiered to positive reception from viewers and fans, maintaining QI’s identity while giving it a sharper, more contemporary edge. The sequence helped signal a new chapter of the show while staying faithful to its legacy of informed curiosity and charm.
